Between Words. Elisabeth S. Clark.

Cuando desaparecen las palabras entramos en un lugar silencioso cargado de significado. Elisabeth investiga ese espacio de en medio habitado por signos y lo convierte en una partitura. Me faltan palabras para expresar la emoción que me provoca su trabajo. Por eso, le pedí que me regalara una reflexión personal sobre la pieza Between Words, porque todavía escribo desde el impacto y el amor a primera vista.

E: Between the words of a text, there is its punctuation. Discreet, sometimes forgotten, it is however essential to the language it surrounds.

Between Words investigates this very space of ‘in-between’. Taking Raymond Roussel’s long 1274-line poem Nouvelles Impressions d’Afrique as its source, it reflects it back, though void of words, as a mere ‘landscape of grammar’ (a landscape of punctuation). In this work, I conceal the words of the poem to isolate an exact facsimile of the author’s punctuation. Then I re-translate this into a score for orchestra or for voice. Little known or discussed is that Raymond Roussel was a musician prior to turning to poetry. It came to my attention that the linguistic structures he devised in this complex poem were comparable to musical structures.

In both highlighting and investigating the topography of language, in this work I seek to draw attention to a significant aspect of language’s construction, materiality, sonority and choreography.
